Houston Airport System saw exceptional growth in June, increasing traffic through Bush Intercontinental Airport and Hobby Airport by 11.4%, to 5.9 million passengers. IAH made up approximately 4.5 million of these passengers, a 10.9% gain, while Hobby made up 1.4 million, a 13.2% increase.  

Houston continues to grow air traffic in 2024. Year to date, HAS has seen over 31 million passengers, up 6.6% compared to the first half of last year. Roughly 23.6 million passengers flew through Bush Intercontinental, a 5.4% increase, and 7.4 million passengers flew through Hobby, up10.5%. Approximately 16.7 million passengers through IAH were on domestic flights, while the remaining 5.97 million passengers were on international flights. From Hobby, approximately 6.88 million passengers were domestic, while approximately 534,000 passengers were international. 

Air Traffic – In the Numbers

Domestic travel through both IAH and HOU in June showed a 13.1% gain, for approximately 4.6 million passengers. Hobby Airport represented approximately 1.28 million of these passengers, for a 13.1% gain, while IAH accounted for 3.34 million, a 13% increase.

Domestic travelers flew predominantly with United Airlines, representing 51% of total passengers. Southwest Airlines made up approximately 28% of passengers, while Spirit, American Airlines and others made up the remaining 21%.

International travel in June showed a healthy 5.8% gain in passenger traffic compared to 2023. Bush Intercontinental Airport saw 1.16 million passengers, a 5-point lift YOY, while Hobby Airport saw over 110,000 international passengers, a solid 13.9% gain. Mexico accounted for approximately 490,000 passengers. Central and South America did not trail too far behind with approximately 335,000 passengers, a strong gain month over month, as Central and South American passenger volume typically sits under 300,000.

United Airlines continues to be the primary carrier through Houston Airport System for international travelers, making up 62% of the market share, an 8.6% YOY gain. Southwest Airlines, however, is seeing healthy year-on-year gains, increasing international passenger traffic by 14%.
