Passenger traffic at Houston’s airports rose 10.7% in August compared with August 2022.

The details: Just under 4 million passengers moved through George Bush Intercontinental Airport in August, up 15.1% from a year earlier. Hobby Airport moved just over 1.1 million passengers during the month, a 2.5% decline compared with a year earlier. Specifically, traffic for Southwest Airlines dropped 3.5% in August compared to August 2022. 

International traffic through Bush airport increased nearly 20% in AUgust while domestic traffic through that facility rose 13.5%. Hobby saw a nearly 8% decrease in international traffic and a 2% domestic decrease.

Broader view: Passenger traffic at the two airports was up 13.6% in the first eight months of the year compared with the same period in 2022. Bush airport experienced a 16% increase in traffic while Hobby traffic rose 6.3% year-over-year. The number of international passengers moving through Bush airport is up 24.1% so far this year, while international passengers through Hobby are up 9.7%.

Among the largest airlines operating out of Houston’s two passenger airports, United Airlines has handled 22.2 million passengers so far this year, up 14% compared with the same period in 2022. Southwest Airlines handled nearly 9.3 million passengers, up 5.2% year-over-year. All other airlines combined handled 8.4 million travelers, a nearly 24% increase.
