As Memorial Day approaches, AAA is expecting a record of 3.7 million Texans to travel over the long weekend, a 3% increase over last year.
According to AAA Texas, about 3.2 million of those travelers are estimated to hit the road in Texas, marking a 2.8% increase.
Nationally AAA is projecting 45.1 million Americans to travel during the holiday period, with 39.4 million traveling by car, a 3.5% increase compared to 2024.
“Texans continue to prioritize travel with family and friends after the pandemic,” said Galen Grillo, AAA Texas vice president and general manager. “This year, consumers will get some price relief at the gas pump, car rental counter, and when flying internationally, but they will spend more on domestic flights, hotels, cruises and tours compared to 2024.”
AAA reports that the average price of a gallon of gasoline in the Lone Star State is currently $2.78, down from an average of $3.19 a gallon a year ago.
Last year, Memorial Day weekend occupancy averaged 67.5% market-wide with an average daily rate (ADR) of $116.
According to a recent survey from travel intelligence firm MMGY, 52% of Americans plan to vacation within the next three months while more than three-quarters of respondents (76%) are planning a leisure trip in the next six months.
