The wait is over, George Bush Intercontinental Airport’s (IAH) new Terminal D-West Pier will open on October 22nd.

Terminal D-West Pier features 16 new retail and dining concessions concepts, creating 250 new jobs. Dining options include The Kitchen, The Annie, Jamba Juice and more. Passengers can also enjoy a visit to the LEGO Store as well as artworks by Houston-based artists.

The expansion includes six new gates — D1 through D6 — which can accommodate wide-body aircraft or can be converted to accommodate 10-narrow body airplanes according to an online press release by the Houston Airport System.

"We are focused on improving the overall passenger experience at the airport – from parking and traffic to providing modern terminals with the right amenities. This project is a major investment in our city's future," said Houston Mayor John Whitmire in the press release. "The newly expanded international terminal enhances Houston's reputation as a world-class city and provides a boost to our economy, supporting jobs and attracting more visitors from around the globe."

The D-West Pier has added 160,000 square feet to Terminal D and will include more than 500 seats, a mother’s room, sensory room, a children’s play area and restrooms.

The expansion project, which began in November 2019, is part of the IAH Terminal Redevelopment Program, a $1.46 billion investment that is aimed at “modernizing the airport's international travel capabilities.” The program includes three main components:

  • The completed refresh of the existing Terminal D in 2023.
  • Terminal Ds expansion with the new D-West Pier, scheduled to open this month.
  • A new International Central Professor which is projected to be completed in winter 2024 and summer 2025.
