Houston now knows most of the teams it will host in the early matches of next year’s FIFA World Cup—and there are some powerhouses coming to the city.
Portugal, Germany and Netherlands are a few of the teams set to play at NRG Stadium, which will be renamed Houston Stadium during the games.
Houston will host a total of seven World Cup matches—five in the group stage, one each in the Round of 32 and Round of 16.
Here’s what we know about the H-Town matches so far:
- Sunday, June 14 at noon: Match 10 - Group E - Germany vs. Curaçao
- Wednesday, June 17 at noon: Match 23 - Group K - Portugal vs. FIFA Playoff 1 (Jamaica, New Caledonia, Congo)
- Saturday, June 20 at noon: Match 35 - Group F - Netherlands vs. UEFA Playoff B (Ukraine, Sweden, Poland, Albania)
- Tuesday, June 23 at noon: Match 47 - Group K - Portugal vs. Uzbekistan
- Friday, June 26 at 7pm: Match 65 - Group H - Cabo Verde vs. Saudi Arabia
For the round of 32 match:
- Monday, June 29: Winner of Group C vs. Runner-up of Group F. Group C includes Brazil, Morocco, Haiti, Scotland. Group F is the Netherlands, Japan, Tunisia, UEFA Playoff Winner B.
Round of 16 match in Houston:
- Saturday, July 4: Winner of Match 73 vs. winner of Match 75. Match 73 is the Group A runner-up vs. Group B runner-up. Match 75 is the Group F winner vs. Group C runner-up.
Fans from across the globe are expected to flock to Houston and the 15 other World Cup host cities during the games next summer, delivering a major economic boost to destinations across North America.
