The Houston Maritime Center & Museum is now open at East River.
The new space expands the 25-year-old institution’s footprint and ability to adequately convey the city’s storied maritime history. The more than 6,000-square-foot museum now includes curated exhibits, a learning center and classroom, interactive children’s zone, theater, and a gift shop.
A focal point of the new space is the panoramic views it offers of Downtown Houston and proximity to Buffalo Bayou—the body of water the city was founded on. Museum officials say the museum now allows for more dynamic storytelling and greater outreach helping Houstonians and visitors understand how maritime trade, innovations and careers directly impact lives and the region's economic future.
"As we open our doors at East River, we're not only honoring maritime history—we're building a dynamic space that inspires future generations, connects our community, and highlights Houston's vital role on the global stage," said the museum’s new president, Margaret Kidd. Kidd is a nationally recognized leader in maritime industry and former professor at University of Houston's Supply Chain & Logistics Technology program.
Museum officials say the space is also now available to host private events, including corporate meetings, networking receptions and social celebrations.
