As travelers take to the sky this summer, the Houston Airport System anticipates seeing more than 19 million passengers this season.
Earlier this month, TSA screened 83,796 passengers in a single day at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU). June 6 marked the second busiest travel day in the Airport System’s history, with the busiest being March 8, 2024 when 84,295 passengers were screened, according to a news release from the organization.
The increases on both these dates align with specific breaks. June 5 marked the last day of school at HISD making June 6 the official start of summer for these students. Similarly, March 8 coincided with the “peak of spring break travel”.
According to the release, Bush Airport is expecting more than 14.6 million summer travelers while Hobby Airport is forecasting 4.3 million. It is expected that most flyers will be traveling domestically with peak travel days being Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
“The high travel volume on June 6 strongly indicates a busy and record-setting summer travel season,” the release stated. “2024 summer forecast is a 7% increase in passenger traffic compared to the summer of 2023.”
Year to date through April, the Houston Airport System moved almost 20 million passengers through Bush and Hobby Airports, up 4.6% compared to the same time period last year. Of the 20 million, IAH saw approximately 15 million passengers, up 3.1%, while HOU logged almost 4.7 million passengers, up 9.8%. International travelers made up approximately 4.1 million of total passenger traffic through both airlines, while domestic passengers made up the remaining 15.5 million, up 3.9%.
