Passengers through the Houston Airport system dropped 5.2% in August to just over 5 million. Domestic traffic represented approximately 3.9 million of these passengers, down 5 percentage points, while international traffic dropped 5.5% to 1.1 million.

Year to date, the airport system has brought in 40.8 million passengers, down just over 1% compared to the same period last year. Domestic traffic has decreased by almost 1%, bringing in 32 million passengers and international passengers have declined by 3% to 8.8 million.

Air Traffic – By the Numbers

United Airlines maintained a consistent share of total passengers through the Houston Airport System compared to last month, at 59%, with Southwest Airlines taking the second largest share at 20%.

At Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), passenger traffic dropped by nearly 4%, bringing in 3.9 million visitors. Domestic traffic represented approximately 2.9 million passengers, down 3%, while international traffic made up about 1 million, down 5.6%. Over 60% of international traffic through IAH in August came from Mexico and Central & South America, with Canada bringing in the next largest percentage at almost 10% -- this is on par with the share of international visitors through IAH last year.

Hobby Airport brought in just over 1 million passengers, down 10% over last year. Domestic passengers made up almost 995,000 passengers, down 10% YOY, while international traffic dropped 4% to approximately 61,400 passengers.
