Passenger traffic at Houston’s airports rose 6.2% in May compared with May 2022.

The details: A total of 3.8 million passengers moved through George Bush Intercontinental Airport in May, up 6.7% from a year earlier. Hobby Airport moved 1.2 million passengers during the month, up 4.6% from a year ago.

Bush airport’s numbers were buoyed by a 14% increase in international traffic during the month. International traffic through Hobby airport rose 4.1% year-over-year.

Broader view: Passenger traffic at the two airports was up 15% in the first five months of this year compared with the same period a year ago. Bush airport experienced a 17% increase in traffic while Hobby rose 9.4% year-over-year.

Among the largest airlines operating out of Houston’s two passenger airports, United Airlines handled 13.4 million passengers so far this year, up nearly 15% compared with the same period in 2022. Southwest Airlines handled nearly 5.6 million passengers, up 7.6% year-over-year. All other airlines combined handled 4.9 million travelers, a 26% increase.
