Home to Houston’s largest conferences and a hub for major events, the George R. The GRB’s convenient location on Avenida de las Americas, places it in the center of the action between the Toyota Center, Minute Maid Park, Discovery Green and connects it directly to the Hilton-Americas Houston and Marriot Marquis via two skybridges.
The History of the George R. Brown Convention Center
Opening its doors on September 26, 1987, the building was named for internationally recognized entrepreneur, engineer, and civic leader George Rufus Brown (1898-1983), who donated six of the blocks necessary to build the GRB.
Since then, the convention campus has continued evolving. In December 2003, the convention center expanded welcoming a 1,200-room convention headquarters hotel now known as the . In December 2016, the 1,000-room Marriot Marquis was welcomed along with the 97,000-square-foot Avenida Houston plaza, creating Texas’ largest convention and entertainment campus.
