Mexican-based low-cost carrier Volaris this week launched new daily service between Houston and Monterrey.
Volaris has been operating out of Houston since 2015, moving 1.2 million passengers over the last decade between this city and destinations including Mexico City, Guadalajara and San Salvador, El Salvador. The new service now underway includes two daily nonstop flights to Monterrey, the second largest metro in Mexico.
Volaris currently offers 11 different routes between Texas cities and Mexico and Latin America.
The Consul General of Mexico Maria Elena Orantes as well as representatives from Volaris, Houston Airport System, and Houston First were on hand for a ribbon cutting event at George Bush Intercontinental Airport on April 2.
"By launching this new international Volaris route, we are enhancing connectivity between southern United States and northern Mexico, providing our customers with more options to enjoy the best travel experiences at the most competitive fares, said Holger Blankenstein, Executive Vice President of Volaris, in a written statement. “This route not only brings friends and families closer together on both sides of the border but also fosters new opportunities for trade and tourism between these two important economic hubs.”
Mexico is Houston’s largest international visitor market, accounting for 1.6 million travelers to the region in 2023. Those travelers spent an estimated $511 million in the market that year, an 8.3% increase over 2022. While the total number of visitors from Mexico in 2024 is not yet available, early estimates are that Houston saw a significant increase over the previous year.
