Houston continues to position itself as one of the most connected international gateways in the United States.

Earlier this month, the first-ever nonstop flight between George Bush Intercontinental Airport and Rome Fiumicino landed in Houston. As of now, Italian-based carrier ITA Airways is operating nonstop flights between the two cities three times a week and will increase that frequency to five flights weekly on June 1.

“This service strengthens our international network, expands options for our passengers and reinforces Houston’s role as a premier global gateway,” said Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for Houston Airports in a press release.

According to Houston Airports, this long-awaited service expands access to Europe for business travelers, tourists and families.

“This first-ever nonstop flight to Rome connects two global cities known for innovation, energy and history. It opens new doors for trade, tourism and investment...,” said Houston Mayor John Whitmire. “This route is a win for travelers, a win for our economy and another signal that Houston has been discovered and continues to lead on the global stage.”

Houston Airports and ITA Airways celebrated the arrival of the inaugural flight with a water arch salute from the Houston Fire Department and a gate-side ceremony.
