As this year’s record-breaking summer travel season comes to an end, Labor Day weekend is expected to close it out with a bang according to airlines and AAA.
This year, domestic travel bookings are showing a 9% increase compared to Labor Day 2023, according to AAA, while the cost to travel domestically is down by 2%.
Travelers staying on the road should expect to pay less for gas compared to earlier this year. According to the AAA Gas Watch, the statewide gas price average in Texas is $2.99 per gallon which is 47 cents less than this time last year.
Taking it to the Skies
This year’s Labor Day travel period is expected to be the busiest on record according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). TSA is preparing for high passenger volumes and is expecting to screen more than 17 million passengers and crew nationwide. This marks an 8.5% volume increase compared to the same period in 2023.
In addition, the Houston Airport System is expecting nearly 888,000 travelers over Labor Day weekend. According to an article by the Houston Chronicle, George Bush Intercontinental Airport could see around 682,000 passengers, marking a 3% increase over last year. While Hobby Airport may see around 205,000 travelers, a 9% increase compared to last year.
United Airlines, Houston’s largest air carrier, is expecting more than 2.9 million people to fly nationwide during the holiday period, marking a 3% increase over last year.
