The Mayor's Art Scholarship competition fosters collaboration among Houston area high school fine arts departments and recognizes excellence in student art, which expresses cultural identities and features life in Houston area neighborhoods. The program is a partnership among the Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs, Houston Arts Partners and the Greater Houston Community Foundation. Young Audiences is the managing partner and fiscal agent for the Houston Arts Partners Coalition, which includes arts organizations, public school districts and institutions of higher education that reach thousands of students annually through opportunities to participate in the arts.
98 eleventh and twelfth grade students from 28 schools in 11 different school districts submitted works in a variety of media. The works are on display through May 13, in the George R. Brown on the Level 2 skybridge between the Hilton Americas-Houston and the convention center. A jury will select the scholarship award recipients, who will be announced at a special reception in the Legacy Room at Houston City Hall on April 30, from 4 - 5:30PM.
