Houston First sponsored the 2018 Houston Consular Ball entitled "Local Innovation for a Global Future." More than 80 countries were represented at the October 13 event hosted by Mayor Sylvester Turner.
The Houston Consular Ball was first organized by the Houston Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) in 1952 and hosted by the Mayor of Houston. In 2013, the Jaycees formally requested the City of Houston Office of Protocol and International Affairs take over the event. The event was then aligned with the 501(c)(3) Houston International Initiatives, which works to streamline Houston’s international outreach and education efforts.
In the past, proceeds from the event directly went to the Jaycees, who then donated that money to local universities. Now, proceeds go to Houston International Initiatives, which in turn donates the money to local universities and the city’s international outreach.
