The Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Council of the Institute of Hispanic Culture of Houston observed International Women’s Day, March 8, 2021 with a virtual presentation. Houston First Corp. board member, Sofia Adrogue served as keynote speaker at the “Women Who Support Women” event. Adrogue passionately spoke about the challenges facing women and mothers, especially during the pandemic.
Adrogue walked the group through the historical connection between women and Houston. She pointed out in 1977 the very first international conference for women’s rights and equality took place in Houston. Many dignitaries and delegates traveled to The Spirit of Houston conference more than four decades ago, which was 32,000 women strong. Adrogue said, “It was no accident that Houston was cofounded by a woman, Charlotte Baldwin Allen who foresaw our beloved city’s name and couldn’t possibly know that would be the first word spoken on the moon.” She closed her remarks with a reminder ‘women are not doing ok’ and stressed the importance of women having a seat at the table.
Houston First is proud to have Sofia Adrogue on the HFC Board of Directors and thankful for her servant leadership in the community.
