Bernard, Shirley Kinsey also recognized in HFC-supported, star-studded gala

Houston First Corporation provided support for the Houston Museum of African American Culture at the organization’s annual gala on October 14 at the Citadel, a special events venue.

This year the Inaugural Lee P. Brown Outstanding Excellence Award was presented to former Houston Mayor Lee P. Brown and Bernard and Shirley Kinsey.

The event's honorary co-chairs were Houston City Council Members Jack Christie and Amanda Edwards. Mayor Sylvester Turner, Council Member Dwight Boykins and the Rev. Bill Lawson, pictured above, were among the special guests.

The museum began in 2000 as an initiative of former Mayor Brown and explores stories inspired by themes of opportunity, empowerment, creativity, innovation and cultural interrelationships through the lens of the African American experience. HMAAC is located 4807 Caroline in the Museum District. It has about six rotating exhibitions a year and hosts a film series.
